Current Health News: News illustrative of insomnia in older people

Current Health News has released a major health problem of insomnia. This can be a serious problem for older adults. Lack of sleep can lead to problems for which mimic the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease: a slower reaction time, increased falls, decreased memory, attention and cognitive performance. Depression and dementia can continue to insomnia. All too often people respond to these challenges by remaining at home, rest and sleep more during the day. This leads to a decreased ability to sleep at night, and the cycle repeats.

If sleep is interrupted, as often in older people, deep stage 3 and 4 of slow-wave sleep cycles (SWS) are difficult to achieve and maintain. It takes time for the body to switch SWS, and any change, whether in reality or not sleeper wakes up, throw the body into a lighter stage of sleep. Current scientific evidence indicates that these cycles of SWS are more restful sleep stage and necessary for the proper functioning of the brain during the day and hormone regulations. Since these hormones affect glucose regulation, SWS sleep deprivation can affect glucose homeostasis and therefore may be a factor for the development of type 2 diabetes, which is a growing problem for older adults.

This type of diabetes is sometimes called adult onset diabetes aggravated by obesity. To control how the results of sleep deprivation on weight gain by an effect on appetite, hormones such as cortisol and leptin and ghrelin increases the quality of sleep is doubly important to control both glucose and weight concerns SWS. This important relationship has gone unnoticed in the past and can be a part of the reason for the alarming increase in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the aging of our population.
